PERSONALITY

"We gotta support him. He's only a kid still; it's easy to forget that."

Ben is in the unenviable position of living in a high stress survival situation, while being old enough to be expected to take on responsibilities and make tough choices, but being too young to have the life experience to emotionally and logically deal with them. Unlike the other, much younger minors of the group, Ben can fully comprehend the horror they're living through and can understand that things will likely never be as they were. But again, his life experience is short enough to make dealing with this knowledge exceptionally difficult.

Unsurprisingly, he fucks up. A lot. He makes the mistakes all teenagers do, unfortunately his mistakes are catastrophic due to making them in an undead apocalypse. In short, he's had to try and grow up in the space of about four months. It's not gone well for him.

He carries with him a lot of guilt, he's indirectly responsible for at least five people's deaths, and that eats at him all the time. He's fully aware that he is the weakest, most destructive member of the group, and that they would all be better off without him, but he lacks the courage to actually leave the group of his own free will. So, instead, he sinks further into his feelings of inadequacy and tries to do something, anything that's right.

The events of Crawford had a massive effect on his psyche. After finally admitting his role in so much chaos the group had been put through, and having the group actually vote to decide if they should abandon him or not, he finally had it confirmed to him that no one (bar Clementine and possibly Lee) wanted him around. His badly put together resolve crumbled, and his will to carry on went with it. Though he didn't plan his fall from the belltower, he used it to his advantage, begging Lee to just let him go, to let him fall, to leave him to die. He knew that the group's survival chances were a lot higher if he wasn't part of them, and decided dying would be the one right thing he could do by them.

Of course, Lee refused to let him die, and Ben dragged himself along after the group a far more broken kid than he already was, confused as to why he'd been spared at all. The thought of saving Clementine was the only thing to give him some kind of purpose again. He resolved to help find her, so at least he could earn some sort of redemption for all the things he'd done. It wasn't to be, though. He died before he ever got a chance to prove himself.

Ben is a nervous kid, thanks to living in a hellzone for far too long, and carries with him more personal demons and darkness than anyone his age should. But he's a genuinely nice person, only wanting to help others, despite his constant blunders. Treat him well, and you have a very loyal friend on your side. Treat him badly, and he won't be surprised, join the line, buddy. He's not sure what he's supposed to do in Paradisa now, after all, how are you supposed to live when your life is already over?

HISTORY

"I know I fucked up, but stop pushing me around and stop wishing I was dead. You know how they died. You've said goodbye. I never got to see my family, my parents, my little sister… do you get that? Your family is gone, but at least you had them to lose. I never made it home. They could be alive, or dead, or walkers or worse and I don't know, so give me a fucking break"

Ben lived with his parents and younger sister in Stone Mountain, Georgia. He played in his High School varsity basketball team, sometimes borrowed his parent's car to drive to Atlanta on the weekends, he seemed to have a pretty average teenage life. He was travelling with his teammates and the school band to the basketball playoffs when the outbreak occurred. The dead began to walk again, attacking and devouring anyone they came across. With no zombie mythology in their world, people began calling these monsters 'walkers' amongst other things. Around forty or so survivors (mostly teenagers) huddled in the school gym in Macon, protected by the band leader, David, where they remained for a period of about three months. Things were not easy for them, one of the cheerleaders eventually took an overdose, and it was then the group learned a horrible truth. Anyone who died came back to life. The girl had reanimated and slaughtered all who were in the girls room with her. If that wasn't bad enough, the group were under constant threat by a group of bandits who had formed from the local convenience store, the Save Lots, who eventually raided their camp, attacking and killing whatever panicked teens they could reach.

Ben fled with his friend Travis, and David into the woods. David blundered into an altered bear trap, unable to free himself. His pained screams brought a hunting party from another group to them. Lee's group. Unfortunately, they also attracted a herd of walkers, and Lee was left with little choice but to cut David's leg off to free him quickly from the trap. Travis was brought down and devoured by the walkers as Ben was dragged off with his teacher to the safety of the Motor Inn, where Lee's group were holed up. Here, he befriended Clementine and Carley, Lee's young charge and a journalist respectively, and the only members of the group to truly accept him. David died of blood loss, quickly reanimating and almost killing one of the group. Ben explained to them that all of them will turn if the brain is not destroyed before or after they die.

He was not welcomed by most of the group, after all, they were starving and he was yet another mouth to feed, but they allowed him to stay, and he finally had the chance to take a breather. The others followed up a lead on food, which ended up with an unfortunate run in with cannibals and the loss of two more of their group. Things remained strained, and at some point, the bandits who had attacked the gym showed up, telling Ben they had one of his friends hostage and that if he gave them supplies from the group, the friend wouldn't be hurt. Ben complied, and the missing supplies only served to fuel the paranoia of the group's self-imposed leader, Lilly. She sent Lee to investigate, and his removal of the hidden supplies caused the bandits to attack the Motor Inn. This also allowed the walkers to break in, and in the process one of the kids, Duck, got bitten. The group escaped in an RV, leaving behind their only sanctuary. Enraged, Lilly began pointing the finger of blame between Ben and Carley. Carley angrily stuck up for Ben, resulting in Lilly shooting her in the face. Lee left Lilly at the side of the road, and the even smaller group carry onwards.

They eventually fond a train, and a homeless man named Chuck, and started off towards Savannah, with the hopes of getting a boat and escaping. Duck grew sicker, and eventually was taken off into the woods to be shot, his mother committing suicide as well. This left Kenny, the head of the family, a broken man, and added to Ben's guilt, knowing he was the defining cause for this to happen. His guilt eventually led him to confide to Lee about it, he was told to keep quiet about it, and they journeyed on, picking up two extra people on the way, Christa and Omid.

They made it to Savannah, where Ben cowardly abandoned Clementine during a walker attack, causing Chuck to give his life to save her. The group learned of a society which formed in Savannah after the outbreak, Crawford. The society kicked out or killed anyone considered a weakness to the group as a whole: the young, the old, the sick, the useless. Eventually, Crawford was overrun with walkers, and it was on a supply run to the place that Ben, once again, screwed up and let a herd of walkers into the building, trapping the group in a classroom. Eaten up by guilt, Ben chose that time to tell Kenny of his part in his family's death. The group decided to put it to a vote, if Ben should be left there and then. Clementine being the one to truly stand up for him, stating he was he friend, and they shouldn't leave friends behind. The vote was put on hold when the walkers forced them all to escape to higher ground, eventually making it to the old belltower. As the group made their escape down a ladder on the side of the building, the bell began to ring. Hanging from it was Crawford himself, reanimated after his suicide. He grabbed for Ben, which led to the teen falling down the shaft of the tower. Lee caught him, and began to pull him back up, only to have Ben beg him to let him go. He understood he was nothing but a burden to the group, their weak link, and honestly felt he had nothing left to live for. Lee pulled him up anyway, and they escaped Crawford.

Clementine vanished later in the day, and Lee was bitten by a walker. Running out of time, the group desperately searched for her. It was during this time that Kenny rounded on Ben, telling him he should have been left in Crawford. Ben finally snapped, yelling at Kenny that yes, he DID feel terrible for everything that happened, and he was sorry. He added that at least Kenny knew what happened to his family. He had no idea what happened to his, and knew he would likely never find out, either. He'd never made it home. Stunned, Kenny stopped harassing him.

Thanks to the ever rising number of walkers, the group decided to search for Clementine by sticking to the rooftops. It was while using a fire escape balcony to hope across from building to another that things took their final bad turn for Ben. The last one to cross, the balcony gave way under him, and he fell to the alleyway below, becoming impaled through the stomach on part of the balcony. Kenny and Lee headed down to help, but Ben's pained screams attracted the attention of the walkers. Kenny forced Lee out of the alleyway, locking him out, and began to fight off the walkers himself, before using the one and only bullet in his gun to shoot Ben in the head, saving him from the horror of being eaten alive and the chance of reanimating. It's at this point he was brought into Paradisa.
